Sejal Patel - Biography

Sejal Patel is the Deputy Director of Research and Policy at SEIU Local 721, where her primary focus is Los Angeles and Orange County City employees. She enjoys working with hard working public employees who are dedicated to joining municipalities in creating solutions for greater efficiencies and revenue generation.

Sejal was formerly a Research Analyst for the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE). She proudly spent her tenure there on LAANE’s Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports project which brings together two of the most important causes of our time: the effort to transform low-paying jobs into middle-class careers and the movement for an environmentally sustainable future. The centerpiece of the project – the groundbreaking Clean Trucks Program was successfully passed by the Los Angeles City Council and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

In April 2010, Sejal authored the report, "From Clean to Clunker: The Economics of Emissions Control" which offered new data to members of Congress to support efforts to pass a Clean Ports bill at the federal level.

Sejal has also been involved with Radio Intifada, a weekly radio program on the Pacifica Network that offers news and analysis of people’s struggles throughout South Asia, West Asia and North Africa.

Sejal holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an M.A. from the University of Los Angeles, California.
